Lessons Learned

From guest speakers: In general, I could see the wide diversity of ways to work towards social change. In particular, I gained a greater understanding of social entrepreneurship and the role of storytelling in social change. As a political science student, guest speakers involved in local government were useful in learning what working in that area was like. They also gave me new ideas about what issue areas and Gainesville organizations to be involved with.

From trainings: I practiced summarize and present my knowledge and ideas on mental health through Lightning Talks (slide from the presentation above). I learned to make long-term plans and set goals in order to organize my efforts in the spring. Finally, I learned about concepts and techniques related to social change and organizing (see page of organizing handbook above).

From community partners: I got hands-on experience in working for programs that support people with disabilities at the CILNCF. I learned the ins and outs of the Paratransit program, and their training taught me about the disability rights movement. In the City of Gainesville Human Rights Board, I learned about local anti-discrimination laws and how they are applied in cases of discrimination. The discussion of the board members has made me realize the strengths and limitations of existing procedures and systems in this area.

From others involved in the cohort: I met someone who is interested in the same issue area as me, and we will likely work together in the future. The others working in different issue areas send different opportunities and bring different perspectives and skills to our common goal of social change. Manda (Program Coordinator) and Aniqa (Student director) were both useful in providing guidance in solving problems and finding new opportunities to make an impact.

Let’s Work Together
